Are not enough
To hold back the
Raging cascade of
Disease-causing muck
Sweeping over the riverbanks
And breaking through levies
And no self-erected barrier
Can hold back
Our consciences
Forever
God’s gentle remonstrances
Will break through our lies
Just as surely
In the end,
Sandbagging
A building
Or a heart
Is futile
*If you're wondering why this is marked "current events", it's because it was written during the floods of 2008, at which point in time the sandbags were very much a physical presence in Iowa City.
